Authentic Printed Gift Card with the authorized signature.Counterfeit Gift Card without printing or signature on the back.unknown JD
We would have loved to participate in any events honoring our military. The founder Jerry Hancock is a Retired Air Force Veteran and founded the company using a Military surplus Air Force Liquid Nitrogen Tank that we still use. Sub Zero would love to participate in any stem education opportunities available.
Jerry first enlisted out of High school with the 419th fighter Squadron working on Ejection seats for 9 years. in 2003 Jerry re-enlisted with the 151 ARW in SLC where he supported commutations for 13 years before retiring.
STEM CITY AT HILL AFB
The Stem City booth did solicit 1000 qty – $5 gift ($5000) cards redeemable only at the Layton store. She (Jamie Dicks) provided Signed and Authorized cards.
Somehow versions were made that did not seem to be authorized or had any of the required signatures or restrictions. We have no idea if these were misprints or counterfeit if the printer made the mistake or if more were made how many. We have had many try to redeem around the state to our surprise. Our store in Spanish Fork who is owned and operated by local Ron and Mary Spann, was the first to notice the unauthorized cards.
What is odd to me :
There are three different versions
Printed second side (Signed and dated)
Blank Back (Initialed) but different Ink and style
These are cash vouchers. If I’ve learned anything from my time in the Air Force is that Security Matters.
AFTER INVESTIGATION AT HILL AFB (GENERAL AND PR)
There was a call from a General at Hill AFB to Jamie Dicks our franchisee in Layton, stating that all the cards received by them were authentic. Sub Zero is not claiming the Air Force or any party to the Air Force created forged cards. There were many groups on base during the air show. For all, we know the printer was in error and some of the 1000 cards did not have the second side printing. We have a strict policy of signing and some were not that were redeemed. May they stuck together at printing?
We apologize if anyone thinks that we are attaching the reputation of the USAF. We are not. As I mentioned Jerry, the founder has 20 years of service in the Air Force and is very proud of the organization.
I hope this will not have an effect on the relationship fostered by Jamie Dicks and her many hours of service to the Air Force personnel. She also owns another company called “My Little Gym”. She volunteers many hours of service on base working with the library. It should be remembered she donated $5000 to the AF event with no expectation of return.
We put security measures in place, such as the second side printing and valid signatures to protect against fraud.
COUNTERFEIT GIFT CARDS ARE NOT A NEW PROBLEM.
In my 16 years of operating a retail business, I have seen many counterfeit coupons, vouchers, and gift cards. Many are sold for cash by businesses to get gain and are not authorized. Some get pretty creative and we’ve had to increase the ways we issue gift cards or vouchers to prevent fraud. Including restrictions and physical signatures. We have primarily moved to digital numbered cards.
WE WILL HONOR AUTHORIZED CARDS – We are more than willing to Honor the Authentic Cards which are clearly marked.
IN GOOD FAITH
Sub Zero will offer for those that received blank backed or unsigned cards – bring the Cards and receive a Buy One item and receive a second 1/2 off. Full price item must be equal or greater value than the second. Expired July 24th, 2018. Offer Code – USAF2018
HOW CAN WE TELL IF GC’S ARE COUNTERFEIT?
The printer that is authorized to print is required to print with the reverse and those type cards were the only ones issued.

We have changed the color from Red to Blue recently.
The coloring of the blue looks copied and is not the TM blue that SZ uses.
We have seen them attempted to be redeemed without a reverse print and they also had a scribble that is not the authorizing signature. (Initials only).
This was horrifying and yet flattering to see our brand being used. Flattering that someone thought of us but horrifying that if we had not caught this it could have wiped us out not knowing how many were printed or where they were being redeemed. The airshow was on Saturday and Sunday. Most Sub Zero’s are closed Sunday and by noon we had lines of people in Spanish Fork asking to redeem these unknown cards.
This gives the company and our brand a very bad reputation because by not honoring them it looks like we are not supporting the Airshow or our military. Farthest from the truth. We simply can’t stay in business with people printing GC which are the equivalent to money in the store.
In addition to the $5000 in Gift Cards Jamie also printed these coupons for our military personnel.
STEM EDUCATION PROVIDED BY SUBZERO
We do offer stem education programs using LN2 and would love to participate in any activities or outreach you may be aware of. We would love to participate in any events Stem City might have in the future.
OUR GOAL IN WRITING THIS:
To extend our support to the military and the Air Show event and to offer something to everyone that attended. It’s embarrassing if someone tries to redeem a voucher and they get turned away. It embarrass the Air fore, the customer and our franchisee. Our effort is in an effort of support.
