Hot Treats: Nutella Waffle Roll Up Review

Did you know Sub Zero is serving up hot treats at participating locations? Today I got to try their hot new Nutella Waffle Roll Up, and it was AMAZING.

Basically, they make you a waffle cone fresh, cook it just long enough to be slightly crispy but still soft, then they add Nutella for filling and roll it up. It’s like a freshly made Pirouline-style cookie but with a waffle texture instead of a swirl. They can make them totally soft by cooking for only 15-20 seconds, or get that slightly crispy on the outside feature that I love by cooking for 25-30 seconds. It’s a good thing I don’t have a waffle iron like this at home, or I might get too addicted to these.

The really cool thing is they have many filling combinations you can try. I tried Peanut Butter Fudge, Marshmallow Fudge, and Nutella Caramel, just a small sampling of the combinations they can do. The fillings were getting all melty, the waffles crispy and warm, they were all delicious!

The Peanut Butter Fudge was a great combo; peanut butter and chocolate go together any time of the year. After a few bites, however, I found myself wanting something more. I think it would have gone better with some ice cream or hot chocolate to balance out so much richness. Perhaps peanut butter lovers would argue that it needs nothing else, but I was wishing for something creamy to cleanse the palate.

The Marshmallow Fudge was like a throwback to summer for a hot minute. It’s basically a s’more in roll up form. The waffle gives it a slightly more vanilla-y taste, but those basic ingredients, marshmallow, chocolate, and an only slightly sweet cookie, they were perfect. Just don’t order it overfilled. That holy trinity must be in perfect balance to be truly enjoyed.

The Nutella Caramel, I think this one was almost my favorite combo. Chocolate and Caramel just complement each other so well! I’m a personal super-fan of turtles with the chocolate, caramel, and pecans, and this is like a warm melty version of that only the crunch comes from that slightly crispy waffle instead of the pecans. For that reason, I highly recommend you order this one closer to the 30 second cook time!

All of these would complement an ice cream, a hot chocolate, or a steamer so nicely, and in that sense, the possible combinations are virtually endless. Take a chocolate caramel theme to go with the nutella caramel, or do something totally opposite for contrast, there are so many possibilities! This has such great potential and is just so tasty, though I must warn you, they can be a little messy! I hope it lasts beyond the traditional winter season. I want these all year round.

Now, after all that tasting, I must admit the truth: the plain Nutella wrap is my favorite. It is just the right combination of warm vanilla-y waffle to gooey hazelnutty chocolate. Though variety is the spice of life, sometimes simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
