Lemon Poppy Seed - Sensation

Lemon Poppy Seed - Sensation

Struggling with choice overload? Sensations are great pre-made choices crafted for you! But what are they really like? Here’s a little mental taste to help you choose.

Start out the decade with a returning classic! This month’s feature is Lemon Poppy Seed: Cake Batter Ice Cream, Poppy Seeds, with a Dickinson’s Lemon Curd Swirl, and let me tell you, this is way tastier than I could have ever imagined. It’s light and fresh and just what I want after the holiday rush.

I’ll admit, I was skeptical. I hadn’t tried it when they had it before because if I’m getting ice cream, I want ice cream, not a muffin, right? But that’s just it. Everything is better as ice cream. If the combination works elsewhere, you can bet it makes a great ice cream. Classics aren’t classic for nothing.

You can order this one of two ways—with or without extra lemon flavor. Most people I talked to like the pizzazz the extra lemon brings, but I actually like the more cake-y subtlety of the without version.

I did like it with extra lemon flavor; it definitely had more pop, more energy, more citrus spark. Without the extra lemon flavor it’s more cakey, more desserty, more subtle and focused on rich creaminess. It’s the difference between surfing in a tropical paradise and laying on the beach in the sun with the water licking your toes.

The lemon curd swirl is perfect. It is so rich and thick, buttery and smooth, almost overwhelming except that you only get a bit of the swirl every now and then, which makes every bite different, the perfect accent. The rest of the time it gives a light lemony flavor. The poppy seeds give it just enough texture, just enough variation in flavor, to accent and enhance the rest of it without the seeds taking over. Cake Batter is an underrated flavor for how luxurious it tastes, and the lemon curd just brings out the best in it.

Bottom line: Choose your level of excitement for this mini citrus vacation. Better as ice cream than as a muffin, poppy seeds bring variation and texture to the rich, smooth, buttery cake and lemon flavors.

Allergy information: Contains eggs and dairy.
